WATER & SANITATION UNIT
OVERVIEW
Water and Sanitation Divison is a water and sanitation service provider on Kiritimati Islands. These include water trucking for potable water to non-water reticulated system dwells, connecting and billing water to every households connected to our water reticulation systems, desludging standalone onsite septic tanks and finally, monitoring salinity for every boreholes and galleries from the water reserves. In addition, under the MLPID's portfolio, Water and Sanitation Division (WSD) is response for any water and sanitation related projects for Line Islands.
VISION
Improve community access to safe and clea water, support innovative approaches to determine the best use of groundwater and rainwater resources, reduce water-related health risks from sanitary facilities.
MISSION
To strengthen advocacy, collabortation, innovation and capacity building for sustainable and resilient water and sanitation in Line Islands.
KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES
- Managing water reticulation systems on the islands and monitoring ground reshwater salinity at sources.
- Potable water deliveries, new connections and water billings.
- Design water system particularly mini galleries and hydraulic design for small scale project at remotes islands.
- Domestic plumbing for new government facilities and infrastructures.

The construction of two toilet blocks for boys and girls at Banana Gulfport Primary School is now completed
WASH BRIS project team conducted a three-day workshop on Sanitation and Hygiene Training for newly recruited Community Hygiene Promoters was successfully conducted from 17–19 April 2025 at the Christmas Island Lodge, Kiritimati Island.
John Nell from SWS Pacific visited Kiritimati last week to investigate long term water supply options (focus on desalination and rainwater) to supplement the current groundwater supply.
Backfilling, site clearing, gallery excavation. Lots happening for Kiritimati's water supply infrastructure upgrades.
There are also two unit hand-washing stations to ensure that every student washes their hands with water and soap frequently.
