Building resilience
through sanitation in the Line Islands (Kiritimati, Tabuaeran and Teraina).
In
support of developing the Line Islands as a tourism and fisheries development
center/hub as stated in the Kiribati KV20, the European Union under its EU-Kiribati
partnership for a sustainable and inclusive socio-economic development, has
committed funds from its 11th European development fund to support
Kiribati in building greater socio-economic and climate change resilience by
improving the use of services and goods provided by the public sector with a
focus on water and sanitation in the Line Islands.
Based
on the support by the EU as stated, a contribution agreement and a description
of action was signed between the EU, Kiribati and the project implementing
agencies SPC and UNICEF in 2020 for the implementation of three project
components that would cover the line islands. These components include the
following.

implemented by SPC

Component 3&$ :
Building resilience through sanitation in the
Line Islands (Kiritimati, Tabuaeran and Teraina). To be implemented by UNICEF.
Ou work
The
implementation of actions was expected to start once the agreements were signed
in 2020 but due to the impact of the covid pandemic a review of actions was
made and were deferred up to 2021. The duration of project implementation is
expected to cover a period of approx 60 months.
Project Budget
EUR 6,2000,000 for the implementation of the Project Component 2:
Accessibility of Safe and sustainable drinking water for Kiritimati Island.
USD 6,944,444 for the implementation of the Project Component 3 &4:
Building resilience through sanitation in the Line Islands (Kiritimati,
Tabuaeran and Teraina).
MLPID WASH PROJEC OFFICE and the overall Project Work plan
Due
to the covid pandemic the MLPID WASH project office together with Water and
Sanitation Division and Development Planning Unit plus other MLPID Divisions
will and has been assisting with the implementation of activities that can be
done and to be implemented in any way that would minimize the impact the
pandemic on the 60 months’ timeframe for completing the project. Activities
that should be carried out within the 60 months’ timeframe for component 2
attached as annex 1 and for component 3 and 4 is attached as annex 2.
Project results.
By
the end of the project implementation the expected results would include the
following.
Component
2 results
a. Improved evidence-based
management of water resources.
b. Increased access to safe
and reliable drinking water supply and
c. Strengthened capacity to
operate maintain and manage safe efficient and accountable water supply system.
Component
3 & 4 results.
a. Raised awareness of good
water, sanitation and hygiene practices
b. Improved sanitation and
hygiene service delivery.
c. Sterngthered WASH resilience
and WASH-related safety, construction and environment.
Those
to benefit from the results of the project components would include all the
population in Kiritimati, Tabuaeran and Teraina, that is from the community,
health centers and schools (early childhood, Primary, JSS and Senior Secondary
schools) and others.
