π About the Division
The Solar Salt & Seaweed Division is responsible for promoting the sustainable development, production, and management of solar salt and seaweed resources throughout the Line and Phoenix Islands. The Division works closely with communities, investors, and development partners to encourage environmentally responsible resource utilization while creating economic opportunities for local communities.
Through innovation, research, and collaboration, the Division supports value-added production, encourages private sector participation, and contributes to national economic growth while protecting the fragile marine environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Production of Solar Salt: Utilizing the natural evaporation process of seawater under the sun, the division produces high-quality, eco-friendly salt. This method ensures a sustainable and clean resource, contributing to the island's economic activities.
- Economic Contribution: The solar salt operation supports local employment and contributes to the economic growth of Kiritimati Island by providing a sustainable resource for both local use and potential export.
- Community Integration: By offering permanent employment to local staff, the division fosters community involvement and ensures that the benefits of the solar salt initiative are shared within the local population.
- Sustainable Resource Management: The division emphasizes the importance of sustainable practices in resource extraction, aligning with Kiribati's broader goals of environmental conservation and resilience against climate change.
- International & Domestic Salt Export: The Solar Salt Division supplies high-quality solar salt both locally and internationally. Domestically, it has served nearby islands such as Teraina and Tabuaeran, while internationally, it has successfully exported to Japan, showcasing Kiritimati's salt on the global market.
